Bloggers check out Holiday Inn?s family welcome

This post is part of a paid promotional campaign BritMums is doing with Holiday Inn. Holiday Inn?s #YoureWelcome campaign highlights how the hotels encourage families to be themselves. BritMums worked with 5 bloggers to promote the campaign. Each blogger visited a Holiday Inn hotel to test our the warm family welcome. Find out what they discovered.

We?ve all done it ? booked a stay in a lovely city, intent on saturating our children with culture and inculcating a rich appreciation of the local scene only to feel it all go horribly wrong on arrival at the hotel: the look on the receptionist?s face as she realises that some of the party are under-18s. The icy handover of room keys and the muttered asides from other (childfree) guests. The sheer strain of the holiday as you walk around grim-faced, determined to prove that your children are much better behaved than everyone else?s. Consequently the joy is leached out of was to be had out of the entire experience. As Cathy of MummyTravels puts it: ?There?s nothing worse than a?hotel where children are tolerated at best.?

So thank heavens for Holiday Inn?s #YoureWelcome campaign, which actively encourages family stays. The group wants children and families to ?be themselves?. No need to worry about mess, stroppiness or child-averse fain dining restaurants. And to prove they mean every word of it, not only do under-19s sleep for free when staying in their parents? room but under-13s can eat for free as well. BritMums sent five intrepid bloggers and their families to test the campaign at Holiday Inns in Brighton, London?s Camden Lock and Liverpool.

How the hotels treat kids

Without exception, each visit passed the warm reception test. Everyone commented on the friendly and efficient check-in and little touches such as the staff handing the wifi code ?not just to me but also to my daughter, recognising her as a guest in her own right? (Jenography.net) are indicative of really getting the hotel?s employees on board. The staff even seemed not just tolerant but appreciative of MummyTravels? toddler?s efforts to turn the lobby area into a den.

Susanna?s three daughters settled in immediately to the lobby at the Holiday Inn Brighton Seafront, relaxing in the funky chairs, ordering hot chocolate, perusing the games to borrow and playing table football (A Modern Mother). When Kirstie of Family Adventure Project arrived, her family put to the test the welcome for ?muddy feet??as well as snoring teens.

Gretta of Mums Do Travel noted the effort and thought put into the policy that extended to the rooms. On her stay, they discovered a pair of binoculars in their family room so her son would could watch the bustle on the nearby beachfront. An accompanying blanket meant he could keep warm if gazing from the balcony. Complimentary sticks of rock set the Brighton mood and go down well with the underage guests.

The adage is that happy parents make happy kids but we all know that non-whiny, unstroppy kids make happy parents. Holiday Inns, with ? at their various locations ? burger restaurants, make-your-own-smoothie options (peanut butter flavour, anyone?), free KitKats in the bedrooms, and more go a long way to achieving that. A great hotel experience not only adds to a child?s holiday memories, knowing from the moment families arrive that we can be ourselves makes it all the more relaxing for everyone.

Button Heart Gift Wrap for Valentine?s Day

We still have a few days left in the 31 Days of Love Series!! What a month it has been to date. Simply beautiful, wonderful, stunning and FUN FUN FUN crafts. I do have to say a big thank you to everyone already? but? it isn?t over yet. Today we have some gorgeous Button Heart Gift Wrap from Adventure in a Box. These button hearts are simply GORGEOUS. I am almost tempted to say ? sod the ?gift wrap? ? make this as a DIY Button Heart Art canvas and then you can keep it forever!!

Hello! I?m Liska from Adventure in a Box, a blog dedicated to family crafting. In our house, Daddy builds wooden puppet theatres, Mommy paints peg fairies, and our son makes nature collages. Life is busy, but we try to add a little bit of creativity and adventure to our ?everyday?.

button-heart-gift-wrapping-finished

When we wrap presents, most of them get wrapped quickly ?  between throwing together lunch and washing up after. But we like to choose a few presents to wrap them with special care. It?s fun, and our son likes to participate!

valentine-gift-wrapping-with-buttons

For Valentine?s Day, we decided to make a special gift wrapping with buttons. There is colour sorting and sensory tactile play involved for kids, but it?s also a peaceful artistic project for adults. I find myself enjoying buttons just as much as my three-year-old does.

For the Button Heart project, you?ll need:

button-heart-gift-wrapping-preparations

  • buttons, beads and glitter in pink, white or red (or all of the above) ? sorting them is part of the fun!
  • wrapping paper (pink, white or red)
  • packing tape
  • scissors

Button Heart Gift Wrap How To:

button-heart-gift-wrapping-4

  1. Measure and cut a piece of paper large enough to wrap your present
  2. Draw the outline of a heart on the back of wrapping paper, so that the heart will be in the centre of the present once it is wrapped. Cut out the heart with scissors.
  3. Assemble buttons on the sticky surface any way you like! Little beads go between buttons, and when there is no space left, my son likes to sprinkle glitter on top.Stick packing tape to the back side of the wrapping paper, so that the sticky side is exposed through the cutout.

button-heart-gift-wrapping-5

  1. Wrap the presents and add matching bows, ribbons, Washi tape and gift tags.

button-heart-gift-wrapping-finished-2

While wrapping these presents took longer than usually, everyone was involved and enjoyed the process. My son was very proud of how he added some special touches to the presents. Now, waiting to give them away will be the hard part.

DIY Pinata Heart

We are on to the next of our very special 31 Days of Love guest posts. Today we have a brilliant DIY Pinata Heart. They are so very pretty and actually look pretty easy to make. I am totally inspired. I LOVE DIY Pinatas and I love all Heart crafts!! This pinata would be a great Valentine?s Party Activity too. Over to the lovely Shannon for more info!

DIY Pinata Heart Craft

I?m Shannon from Oh Creative Day, an Australian teacher and mum of 2 kids under 2. I blog about the perfectly-imperfect bits of my creative everyday (aka trying to survive until nap time.) I?d love it if you popped by to join in the celebrations of picture books and craft.

Let?s make some diy piñata hearts!

DIY Pinata Hearts ? Materials

Here?s what you will need?

to make a diy pinata heart you will need this items

This activity is great for kids aged 6+ with adult assistance.

However, my 2-year-old loved sitting beside me and created her own tissue paper collage whilst I created piñatas.

And let?s be honest- people of ALL ages love the chance to whack a piñata!

How To make a DIY Pinata Heart:

How to make a DIY Pinata heart

  1. Use your template to trace 2 hearts onto the thick cardboard. Cut them out.
  2. Cut a strip of card stock. My strip is about 4 cm (1.5 in) wide.
  3. Secure the card stock to the heart base using strips of duct tape at regular intervals, leaving a gap for you to stuff your piñata with treats.
  4. Repeat process with lid of heart.
  5. The fun part?. Fill your piñata. To avoid sugar highs, you could fill your piñata with craft buttons, stickers or love notes instead.
  6. Tape the gap closed.
  7. Cut strips of tissue paper that are slightly wider than your card stock strips. Using white glue, cover sides of the heart with strips of tissue paper. Overhanging tissue paper can be folded and glued over the edges.
  8. Cut strips of tissue paper about 2cm wide. Cut thin strips to create fringing.
  9. Glue fringing from bottom of heart, overlapping on top of the next strip. Trim excess.
  10. If you don?t have the time (or patience!) for fringing, you could collage the tissue paper on and add some simple embellishments.

  1. Cut some yarn or twine and tape it to the cardstock at the top of your heart.
  2. Hang your piñata and you?re ready!

Wishing you all much piñata fun!

Single Parent Round-up: Happy new ear!

single parent round-upHappy new year! How are you doing? It feels a little silly saying that now, at the end of January ? but my daughter is saying it so why shouldn?t I? In fact, she?s not actually saying happy new year; she?s saying happy new ear! She says it to bin lorries, to shops, to dogs in the street. It?s adorable!

So how has your January been? I?ve been busy scouting around for the best posts by single parents? so let?s take a look at what I found!

I loved this post by Junesola about the joys of bed sharing. We share a bed in this house too so I can totally relate to what she?s saying ? not sure I could say it in such a witty manner though.

This post from Martyn at Inside Martyn?s Thoughts really bothered me. Martyn addresses the underlying prejudice against single dads ? why would he want a library card for his sons? Is he really a part of their family?

I absolutely love this post from Mel at Hypnotherapy Uxbridge about how she helped her son to feel more relaxed and comfortable at bed time. I love how she took a whole week about it as well!

Hannah from Hannah Spannah has written a great post sharing the highs of her son?s fourth birthday party, and the lows of ongoing co-parenting issues ? this describes what it?s like to be a single parent: organising birthday parties on your own, and dealing with absent parents when you?d rather be back at the birthday party.

With a complete change of pace, Bek from Dillydrops has been posting about how to get children ready for school in the morning. This one made me chuckle because it?s something we all struggle with, isn?t it? Or is it just me who always leaves the house 5 minutes before we were due at nursery?

I absolutely loved this post from Carla at Random Thoughts of a Twenty Something. It?s a lovely list of things she?ll cherish about 2015 ? but more importantly, it seems to be a realisation that although she went through a difficult time, she actually had a great year.

If you?re a single parent blogger and you would like to be included in one of these round-ups, please do get in touch with me ? I?m @singlemahoy on Twitter, or you can email [email protected].

The next single parent round-up will be compiled on February 25th so please get in contact by then!

She has been a single mother since her daughter was 2 weeks old, and started blogging to try and give voice to her feelings of ?lost-at-sea-ness? that all mothers get, but that single mothers often don?t have any company in. In her spare time, she usually develops addictions to dvd box sets and sometimes cleans the living room? but not often.

Heart Teabags ? Valentines Hot Chocolate

Hi, I?m Karin from Kayjaysews and I am thrilled to have a chance to share one of my ideas here on Red Ted Art for the 31 Day of Love Series. I am a part-time researcher and part-time Mama. As a maker at heart, not many things in life give me more joy than making something with my hands ? preferably with my three-year-old daughter and from things we already had around the house. Yay for recycled crafts! I?ll show you a couple of things we have made later on, but first ? Valentine?s day ? our Heart Teabags filled with yummy Hot Chocolate!

You have probably seen or made heart-shaped tea bags before ? an idea I always loved, but I wanted to adjust it to suit the younger crowd, who are more into hot chocolate than tea.

Heart Teabag Hot Chocolate Treats for Valentines Day

Heart Teabags ? Valentines Hot Chocolate MATERIALS

So here?s what you need to make these for chocolate lovers big or small:

  • empty loose leaf tea bags (get them here ? US/ UK (affiliate links))
  • hot chocolate powder
  • a teaspoon
  • needle and thread (sewing machine optional)
  • scissors
  • some cardstock

How To Make Your Heart Teabags ? Valentines Hot Chocolate

  1. First, we made the teabag tags. We chose hearts, but you can do any shape ? and even write a little message on it.

  1. Then, the filling of the teabags begins ? nice fine motor skill activity for little hands, too. I used two heaped teaspoons of hot chocolate powder per bag.

  1. I then sewed the bags shut just above the chocolate filling ? it?s perfectly fine to hand-sew them, too. You?ll see that I backstitched across to the centre of the bag ? then just pull the bag out, but do not cut the thread.

Choose desired length for the string (about 10cms) and then sew on the tea bag tag ? in our case the little hearts. Done!

The recipient can put it into a cup of warm milk and enjoy their very own hot chocolate.

What I like about this idea is how flexible it is ? you can make these and fill them with hot chocolate powder as we did, or loose leaf tea, of instant coffee powder, you can make them in a heart shape, you can write a message on the tag at the end of the string, or cut out the tag from your toddler?s paintings ? Please tag me on Instagram if you do this as I would love to see your versions! Love, Karin X

7 Problems With The WWE Fastlane 2016 Main Event

How did this match ever get booked?

WWE.comWWE.com

In case you somehow missed it, the main event for Fastlane 2016 is Roman Reigns versus Brock Lesnar versus Dean Ambrose, in a triple threat to decide who will go on to face WWE Champion Triple H in the main event of WrestleMania 32.

How WWE ever came up with this booking is a complete and utter mystery. It isn?t that it is necessarily a bad match; the in-ring action should be very good, but it is devoid of any narrative sense. It?s just a baffling booking.

Far from helping any of the men involved, it is only going to devalue their characters and make their prospects much worse. Frankly, it is as if WWE?s creative has lost all sight of anyone not called Triple H on their roster. Either that, or the company is just totally out of whack with the audience, who are likely to react very badly to the expected Roman Reigns victory.

Indeed, the expected match lay out is as follows: Brock Lesnar will be attacked and taken out by Bray Wyatt, with Reigns and Ambrose left to battle it out. After a valiant back and forth, Reigns would then score the pin over his comrade. It sets up Reigns versus Triple H, Lesnar versus Wyatt, and it leaves ammunition for Ambrose turning in the post-Mania season.

However, as the following points demonstrate, it is a booking that could backfire severely on WWE?s WrestleMania season vision.

Test and Tips

Green Arrow will be going Dark Knight in Legends of Tomorrow

Stephen Amell already popped up in the excellent first episode of Legends of Tomorrow.

He will be guest starring in a future episode of the show. As it is all about time travel, we will be seeing the Green Arrow of 2046.

Turns out he will be rocking the goatee and his son Connor Hawke will be with him. It also appears they will giving a nod to Frank Miller?s The Dark Knight Returns.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim had this to say about it:

Every once and a while, we do an episode where the 10-year-old me has to pinch himself. We?re not only introducing our version of Connor Hawke to our universe, we?re going to meet the 2046 version of Oliver Queen, and Stephen Amell is going to be reprising his role from Arrow. As an added bonus to comic-book fans, Oliver is missing his left arm and will be sporting a goatee, in a nod to the character?s appearance in the seminal Dark Knight Returns. We think this episode features some of the coolest things we?ve ever done.

That sounds very cool. So we have got Jonah Hex and now an older Green Arrow to look forward to. Who else will crop up?

The CW?s Legends of Tomorrow  stars Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom),Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Martin Stein/Firestorm), Franz Drameh(Jefferson Jackson/Firestom) Ciara Renée (Kendra Saunders/ Hawkgirl), Falk Hentschel (Carter Hall/Hawkman), Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter), Caity Lotz (White Canary) and Casper Crump as Vandal Savage.

In DC?S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, when heroes alone are not enough? the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat ? one in which not only the planet is at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?
