Robot exploder Nex Machina blasting onto PC in June

Nex Machina header

Nex Machina [official site], a twin-stick shooter with explosions, robots, particles, and more explosions, is coming to PC on June 20, developer Housemarque has announced.

The company has largely focused on the PS4 in recent years and I?ve heard good things about its games, particularly Alienation, so I?m glad it?s returning to PC. The last time it was here was in 2011 with Outland, which you may remember as as a flashy 2D platformer. I was a big fan.

In Nex Machina, robots have overrun us puny humans. It?s your job to shoot waves and waves of them from a top-down perspective, racking up as many points as possible on your own or in local co-op.

Really, it?s an excuse to create massive explosions with lots of particles. The developers really, really love particles. They?ve even sent out a slow motion gif (below) to show those particles in action.

Nex Machina is the result of a collaboration between Housemarque and Eugene Jarvis, a veteran designer of games including Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV, which I?ve never played but I hear provided ludicrous, over-the-top action. No doubt those roots will shine through.

It?s going to be ?pure, distilled, undiluted action? (a similar tagline to the stuff I use to bleach my toilet), and you don?t have long to wait. Here?s a full trailer:

Early Access launch for Oxygen Not Included, the space colony management sim

ONI header

Oxygen Not Included [official site] is a space colony management sim from Klei, the guys behind the excellent Invisible Inc. It?s been in alpha since February but now it?s launched on early access, and I?m intrigued.

It?s got the aesthetic of Don?t Starve, another Klei game, and involves building up a settlements beneath the surface of a distant planet and battling through the inevitable crises, whether that?s clouds of poisonous red gas in your base or a shortage of pepper bread. A lot of it is in the style of RimWorld, except it?s all side-on.

Now, before you decide whether you suit up and blast off, it?s worth reading Brendan?s alpha Premature Evaluation, in which his colonists were forced to wade through ankle-deep puddles of human urine. Here?s his account:

?Sadly, the mopping was doing little to stop the failure of the colony. All these crises culminated and Yellow Water soon descended into absolute piss carnage. Stress levels among the colonists sky-rocketed and a man called Grub began to vomit from the anxiety of living in such a stinking yellow hell. Snores O?Duggan, a man who slept apart from everyone else because he snored so loudly that it kept the others awake all night, began to destroy batteries throughout the colony in a blind rage, systematically disabling filters, air pumps, the distillery and the mush machine. Even in the dark and quiet nights, piss dripped down from the sleeping quarters, going from level to level before finally getting into the water supply.?

That sounds like great fun to me, in a gross sort of way. Overall, Brendan thought it had promise but lacked some of the drama and personality of Rimworld.

Since he gave it a go there?s been a few new features implemented, and the early access launch adds a beefed up agricultural system that makes farming a more central part of the game. Read about the changes in detail here.

For what it?s worth, the Steam reviews are looking good so far. If you fancy solving your own piss crisis it will set you back £18.99/22,99?/$24.99, and if you own any other Klei games you?ll get a 20% ?loyalty discount?.

Here?s the trailer. What do you reckon?

SEND Round-up: Undiagnosed & fitting in

SEND Round-up

Hello from me and the SEND Blogger Community! It?s time for May?s SEND Round-up and this month?s starts with a farewell. Steph Curtis, an amazing woman and awesome blogger at Stephs Two Girls, has decided it is time to pass on the Britmums SEND Round-up editor baton. Steph has been writing this round-up for several years and I know we all appreciate the great job she has done in spreading the word about SEND.

Possibly ending her time with a little lunacy, Steph has entrusted me with the honour of covering SEND Blogging each month.  I hope to be able to live up to her standards.  If you don?t know me, I?m Ann.  I write over at Rainbows are too beautiful and you can read more about me on my profile. Now that?s done, on to the round-up.

The SEND Bloggers have, as always, been busy in the last month.  And none more so than those spreading the word about Undiagnosed day which fell on Friday 28th April. If you didn?t know, there are some 6,000 children born every year who remain undiagnosed. So it?s not unusual to be undiagnosed, according to Orange This Way. Brody, Me and GDD says it?s difficult to get your head around never knowing why a child has difficulties, but not having a diagnosis doesn?t mean no one understands.

Indeed both Gingerbread and Sunshine and As Alex Grows Up reach out to mothers of newly undiagnosed children and The World of Gorgeous Grace tells us why it?s so important to find these families. Many of the posts mention the work of SWAN UK (Syndrome Without A Name) and The Inclusive Home?s post highlights some of the important work they do.  The Long Chain tells us why they simply didn?t fit in anywhere else.

Fitting in or not fitting in has also been on the minds of SEND Bloggers this month.  FASD: Learning with Hope writes about why they wished they known why her son was different earlier and the difference it could have made.   The difference made by her son?s first teacher is on Someone?s Mum mind and the idea of ?normal? has been difficult for Mummy Times Two.  Finding out about her son?s NF1 has led to scaniexty for Faith Mummy and knowledge that hospital visits will be ongoing.  Meanwhile, A Blog about Raising my Autistic Son isn?t being precise enough to get her son to go to bed.

Supposedly simple things like getting on at school, birthday parties and playdates can be difficult for many children with SEND but these are being considered as fleeting moments of jealousy by Life ASD and the Rest.   And this allows me to end our Round-up on a few highs.   This Little Boy of Mine and her son both preparing for his upcoming birthday celebrations and the real value of playdates, indeed friendships, is a special realisation for Joseph and his Amazing Spectrum Coat.

I look forward to reading your posts over the next month, please link up your ideas for the June?s Round-up.

Haas changes livery for Monaco Grand Prix | 2017 Monaco Grand Prix

Haas has revealed a revised car livery in time for this weekend?s Monaco Grand Prix.

The team has replaced much of the red portions of its livery with grey. Team principal Guenther Steiner said the change will be ?for the whole year now.?

?With the change in the size of the numbers and its positioning, we looked into making the entire car a little more visible.?

According to the team: ?Sleek tones of gray have replaced the red portions of the car, save for the angular red accent mark at the rear which has been a trademark of Haas F1 Team since its debut last season. It?s a styling upgrade for a locale where upgraded style is a way of life.?

Linkin Park: Every Album Ranked From Worst To Best

Linkin Park Warner Bros.

Linkin Park’s seventh studio album, One More Light, is available now, and though the band has had its sure ups and downs over the last two decades, the impact they’ve had on the rock music scene throughout is undeniable.

From their explosive origins with 2000’s Hybrid Theory to their more divisive and experimental recent releases, the band has been in a near-constant state of reinvention over the years, such that their current style feels almost totally divorced from the one that made them famous in the first place.

With One More Light being arguably their most radical release to date, it’s a damn fine time to revisit the outfit’s discography and figure out how the much-anticipated new release fits in with the rest of their back catalogue…

7. One More Light (2017)

Linkin Park One More Light Warner Bros.

Best Track: One More Light

Worst Track: Heavy

Sadly, the band’s brand-new release is by far their worst to date, pulling them even further towards the pop music spectrum while delivering a record virtually indistinguishable from their earlier albums.

There are a few catchy tunes throughout, and it smartly clocks in at a svelte 35 minutes, but the Stormzy collaboration (Good Goodbye) is legitimately cringe-worthy, there aren’t enough guitars or Mike Shinoda, and overall it feels like a cynical step back rather than another ambitious style change.

At least future records probably can’t get any worse than this though, right?

Brawn hires former staff to plan F1 revamp | 2017 F1 season

Formula One motorsport director Ross Brawn has appointed three major new hires to his team including two former members of Brawn GP.

Nigel Kerr will take on the role of finance director for motorsports from August. He joins F1 from Mercedes, where he worked as chief strategic officer, and worked for the outfit during its previous incarnations as Brawn, Honda and BAR.

Kerr was involved in Brawn GP?s buy-out of the team from Honda when the Japanese manufacturer withdrew from the sport at the end of 2008. He also worked on Brawn GP?s sale to Mercedes the following year.

He will be joined by fellow ex-Brawn employee Craig Wilson, who will be head of vehicle performance at F1. Wilson will work alongside new head of aerodynamics Jason Somerville.

Somerville?s experience includes spells at Williams, Lotus and Toyota as well as BMW?s successful Le Mans 24 Hours programme.

Wilson and Somerville will be part of a new group charged with researching and planning F1?s future regulations, in co-operation with the FIA?s Formula One technical department. Their brief is ?improving the entertainment value, the sustainability and the sport of Formula One?, according to a statement issued by F1.

Brawn described his new appointments as ?three extremely experienced figures who have established themselves as experts within Formula 1 over many decades.?

?We are building a team that enables stronger links to be forged between Formula 1?s management and the sport?s various stakeholders, ensuring that regulations are implemented with the involvement of all parties.?

Injustice 2: All Premier Skins Ranked (And How To Unlock Them)

Injustice 2 Green Lantern Warner Bros.

Seeing NetherRealm take the time to release a perfect sequel, Injustice 2 is a brilliant addition in the canon, continuing to prove the developer’s competence as the kings of the fighting game genre and fleshing out the Injustice storyline itself new ways.

Whilst there are a ton of new features to get stuck into, Premier Skins are the somewhat genius way of adding a new character to the roster, without having the devs design entirely new movesets. Mr. Freeze may be missing from the roster for example, but as a deluxe palette swap for Captain Cold, nobody’s really complaining.

Best of all, these skins come with unique introductory lines that also make other characters address them properly, and some with victory poses, too. In short, it’s a faster way to get your favourite heroes and villains into the game – provided they play well, of course.

Acquiring these skins comes with a number of different requirements, ranging from having bought the Deluxe Edition of the game (this is still Warner, Bros., after all) to forking out 6000 in-game Source Crystals.

Thankfully and astonishingly, there is a way to unlock the whole set without paying more than the retail price – though you can purchase more Source Crystals with additional cash to speed things along.

Who should you buy first though?

Marvel’s The Defenders: Every Character Confirmed So Far

The DefendersMarvel/Twitter

Four years in the making, Marvel’s The Defenders will finally assemble on Netflix this summer.

The miniseries, which hits on August 18, is the result of a hugely ambitious project, an attempt at recreating the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the small-screen that has led to five seasons of television across four different shows, all building to this epic crossover event.

It’ll pick up on strands from the various seasons of the Netflix Marvel Universe so far, and setup others for further standalone adventures, bringing together the four main heroes, a number of supporting characters, and a few new characters as well.

It promises to be very big, packing a lot into its eight episodes, and there are likely to be more casting announcements to come (those rumours of a Punisher cameo won’t be going away anytime soon), but we do already know a lot of characters who have been confirmed.

17. Danny Rand

Danny Rand Iron FistNetflix

Confirmed By: Being one of the four Defenders.

Plot Predictions: After discovering that K’un-Lun has gone AWOL at the end of Iron Fist’s first season, Danny Rand will be back in New York, presumably trying to figure out just what the hell has happened, and what the Hand are up to.

That’ll be the trail that leads him to Midland Circle, the offices where the Defenders will meet for the first time. As the Sworn Enemy of the Hand, he’ll have an obvious stake against them, but should also serve as the more lighthearted member of the team. There’s a lot of seriousness between the other three, so Danny can play something akin to the Hawkeye role here – though judging by the trailer, people don’t take to him immediately.

Finn Jones has also said that we’ll see him more at ease with life as a superhero, and have a lot of drive and try to get all of the others to work together. That does make sense, as he’s the one most open to teamwork, and the one most in need of it. We should also get a solid relationship built between him and Luke Cage, at least nodding to their Heroes for Hire comic book history.
