Food Round-up: Strawberries

Food round-up: cooking

Photo credit: Dragon Images via Shutterstock

Please allow me to introduce myself? I?m Claire and I?m your new BritMums Foodie Round-up Editor taking over from Kirsty Phillipson-Lowe who has done a sterling job. I?ve been blogging my Edible Scottish Adventures at www.foodiequine.co.uk since 2012 and I?m a mum of two currently battling through their teenage years.

Enough with the introductions. Time for the main event ? the recipes!

Can you believe that we are half way through the year already?! June means sunshine, summer holidays and the run up to Wimbledon, which in turn means Pimm?s and Strawberries! British berries are the bomb (patriotically I would say that Scottish are even better? and I?m sure Andy Murray would agree with me!)  As lovely as they are served up simply with either cream or ice cream they also make a fantastic and versatile ingredient as demonstrated in the sheer variety of recipes below from some of the UK?s top food bloggers. Grab a punnet and get cooking.

Lets start with Jam. My Granny was a prolific jam maker but I?m not quite sure what she?d make of my boozy  Strawberry and Prosecco Jam.  Perhaps Camilla at Fab Food 4 All?s Rhubarb and Strawberry Jam would be more up her street.  They are certainly two fruits that work fantastically well together. Kate at The Veg Space has taken another twist on tradition with her Fig and Strawberry Jam which she she suggests for atop of scones whilst Wimbledon watching.

Strawberries

Should we actually get a scorcher of a summer you?ll be needing something stashed in the freezer to cool down with. Kate at Veggie Desserts Strawberry and Matcha Popsicles would most definitely fit the bill ? she even recommends them for breakfast. The Strawberry Ice Cream from Le Coin de Mel can be made in less than 5 minutes and uses only 4 ingredients. That?s my kind of recipe! Meanwhile Jemma at Celery and Cupcakes is tempting us with a truly divine looking Chocolate Covered Strawberry Sundae.

Victoria Sponge is a British Summer classic and Emma at Free From Farmhouse has made a Vegan version with Coconut Cream decorated with summer berries. White Chocolate and Strawberries are a match made in heaven as demonstrated by A Strong Coffee with a showstopping cake to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Botanicals a plenty from Mummy Mishaps in her Lemon, Basil and Strawberry Cake which would be sure to wow Paul and Mary.

If a Strawberry Tea Party is on the cards this summer Daniela?s Strawberry & Cream Shortcakes would be perfect although I?m equally tempted by the appearance of rhubarb in Angela at Only Crumb?s Remain?s Rhubarb and Strawberry Meringue Cupcakes. When it comes to delectable desserts Strawberries really do come into their own. Elizabeth?s Kitchen Diary shows us how its done with a showstopping Chocolate Strawberry Pavlova.  Choclette used a vintage jelly mold to make a wibbly wobbly Vegetarian Strawberry Blancmange whilst Hijacked by Twins shares a refreshing No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake which can be prepared ahead for effortless entertaining. Alternatively The Slimming Foodie has a Guilt Free version ? so good it practically has a halo!

Bintu at Recipes from a Pantry proves that Strawberries don?t have to be kept solely for sweet dishes with her awesome recipe for Bacon and Strawberry Flat Bread Pizza.  I?m going to be so bold as to suggest my own Strawberry, Cucumber and Mint Salad with a Pimm?s Dressing to accompany it.  Whilst we?re at it lets go the whole strawberry hog and wash it all down with Diana at Little Sunny Kitchen?s Strawberry and Watermelon Smoothie. Could there be anything more refreshing on a hot summers day?!

Out of all the Strawberry recipes in this roundup, the one I was most intrigued by is Oven Baked Strawberry and Rhubarb Risotto from Mandy at Sneaky Veg. This I will most definitely be trying.

See you in July for a BBQ Round-up. Drop me an email [email protected] if you have a recipe post that you?d like included.

Until then, lets go Andy, let?s go!

Ranking The Terminator Franchise From Worst To Best

This summer, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is seeing a re-release across the globe in up-converted 3D. Widely regarded as the best instalment in the franchise, T2 was also the most financially successful and the only instalment of the series to gross over $500 million.

The inspiration for this re-release appears to be the 3D re-release of Titanic in 2012, which grossed an additional $343 million pulling it over the $2 billion mark. Titanic was not initially released in China and made a killing in the territory in 2012, so James Cameron who helms this effort as well, hopes to do the same in the People’s Republic.

The success of the T2 re-release may also be a trial balloon to see if there is still a strong international marketplace for another Terminator film. Skydance Media, with James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger?s involvement, are developing a new Terminator movie with Deadpool director Tim Miller looking to direct.

Due to the critical failure and middling financial success of Terminator Genisys (it was supposed to launch a new trilogy), Skydance is looking in other directions. Specifically, CEO David Ellison has gone on record in the last couple months about T6: ?I think where it?s going will be the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2.?

Whatever happens, one thing is clear – the better instalments of the franchise should be used as inspiration for T6 and whatever the franchise has in store for its future.

Deadly Accuracy ? U-Boat Watches

U-Boat Watches was founded in 1942 out of necessity, when founder and designer, Ilvo Fontana was commissioned by the Italian Government in 1942 to design a watch for use by pilots of the Italian navy. His plan was to produce a watch with an emphasis on high visibility, as he knew the pilots would encounter low light and bad weather conditions.

Unfortunately his dream was never realised and the designs lost, until in the year 2000 Ilvo?s grandson Italo decided to develop the U-BOAT watch as a tribute to his grandfather. Though based on the original designs, slight alterations have been made to make U-BOAT as we know it today; namely large, sturdy watches with bold designs. With their trademark large crown on the left side of the watch case and outstanding technical specifications, U-Boat Watches are designed to stand out from the crowd and stand up to the most demanding climatic conditions.
U-BOAT Classico watches capture the essence of the brand?s popular style with their bold military-inspired design, wide dial, and often a metal plate affixed to the strap. Timeless and iconic, the Classico is clean and uniquely styled model with its characteristic case, crown security device, on the right hand side, as well as the sandwich dial, constructed of two discs, one is superimposed on top of the other.
Classico represents Fontana?s idea of the pure, timeless design that does not fade and die like passing trends and it is designed for individuals with strong personal style. The new Classico boasts a tough temper thanks to the 48 mm black matt ceramic case on the outside and internally in black steel. The back of the case is sealed with 7 external screws, with sapphire crystal showing the movement balancer. The deep black dial features spheres and indexes in beige colour treated with superluminova. In addition to this an extra counter showing the 24 hours of the day has been added to the dial. Last but no least a calf leather strap with a deployant buckle in burnished steel after the IPB treatment.
